Associated Labels uses highend Macintosh/Creo prepress workstations to create artwork for flexography. We are compatible with the postscript world found on computer platforms like Windows and Unix, as well as Macintosh. The following guidelines are intended to make jobs supplied on disk proceed as smoothly as possible, thus cutting costs and saving time. You will be charged for changes that must be made in order to meet our requirements.

Any questions and concerns can be directed to Tom or George in the Art Department at (604) 525–4764

Planning to view label proofs that you have downloaded from our web server or that we have e-mailed to you?
These proofs are saved in PDF (portable document) format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader to be viewed successfully.

Guidelines for Submitting Artwork from Macintosh Applications
Due to copyright limitations it is not advisable that you supply us with the fonts required for your job. Instead, please call to determine if we do indeed have the fonts you are intending to use. If necessary we will arrange to purchase the fonts required. As an alternative you can convert all your type into outlines in Illustrator or Freehand; this may increase your file size, but it also decreases the possibility of font incompatibilities.

Try to use only Adobe Type 1 fonts. Presently, other fonts such as Bitstream, Truetype, etc. can create font compatibility problems with our prepress system.

All text should be created in a vector drawing program (Illustrator or Freehand) or page layout application (Quark Xpress), and NOT in an image editing application (Photoshop). For typefaces with very fine serifs, create your text in Illustrator and add a 0.1pt stroke to slightly thicken the serifs.

Do not trap your job. Our art department will trap the job to our specifications.

Do include a minimum bleed of 1/16" outside the die cut area. This is particularly important when an image (Photoshop file) bleeds off the edge of the label.

Include all EPS files (Illustrator) and their original source files (Freehand). The EPS files are needed in order to make the proper postscript file. Include all image files (tiff or eps in cmyk format at a minimum of 300 dpi), and provide original layered photoshop document whenever possible. Do not embed images in illustrator files; placed eps files are preferred. If any errors occur, the source files are needed in order to isolate and fix the error.

In Photoshop, when you are converting from RGB to CMYK use the SWOP Coated setting at 28% dot gain.

Any screen values in your job must not be below 1%. This applies mainly to gradient fills in vector drawing programs. If your gradient is made up of process colour (not spot PMS colours) then you have to account for the minimum dot percentage that would appear in each separation. A good general rule is to not go below 10% for process gradients and not below 1% for spot PMS gradients.

All line weights (line strokes) to be a min. of 0.01” or 0.7 pt.

When creating the job/label solely in Illustrator, set all black text to Overprint. Do not use transparency, drop shadow, feather, glow (etc.) effects from illustrator 9 or 10. These are not compatible with print production processes. Instead, use placed eps files from photoshop.

If you are using Quark Xpress please make sure that your picture files are updated/OK before you give
us the file.
